Notes:
From The Nottingham Evening Post, Wednesday 17 July, 1907:

Death of CJ Spencer
Mr. Spencer, who was 58 years of age, served as deputy superintendent registrar from 1870, and was appointed assistant to his father, who was then clerk to the Basford Union. In 1880 he succeeded that office, and held it up to the time of his death. He served as a clerk at the Hucknall Local Board in 1868, and acted in a similar capacity to the Arnold Local Board and the Arnold Burial Board. He was held in the highest regard throughout the county, and was a most experienced and efficient poor law official. On December 16th, 1905, the members of the Basford Board of Guardians and Rural District Council presented him with a silver monteith bowl and two rose bowls to mark the completion of 25 years’ service as clerk to those two authorities.
Mr Spencer was a famous athlete, and in his day was unquestionably the finest 120 yards hurdle racer in the country. At that time there was no recognised championship, although a so called championship was held in London in April, which, by reason of the time of the year was practically only contested by Oxford and Cambridge men. Then the present Sheffield F. C. organised races held in the Northern counties, and offered challenge cups, which were generally regarded by athletes as championships, although not officially designated as such. The challenge cup offered for the 440 yards hurdle race was won three years in succession in the ear
